The History of the BB&T Center

The BB&T Center can trace its origins back to 1992 when the NHL granted an expansion contract for the Florida Panthers. For the first few years, the Panthers would share a home with the NBA’s Miami Heat while the BB&T Center was built, and the team moved into their new digs in 1998.

One of the quirky things about this arena’s history is that it’s been renamed nearly half a dozen times since it was built. First known as the Broward County Civic Center while it was being built, naming rights have changed hands so many times that BB&T Center was once known as BankAtlantic Center, Office Depot Center and National Car Rental Center. What’s in a name, right?

BB&T Center sports events revolve around the Florida Panthers, with the arena originally being constructed as a permanent home for this NHL team. This doesn’t mean this venue hasn’t seen its share of other sports events, as it’s regularly used for basketball events and even occasionally indoor football and soccer.
