As many expected, Crosby became hockey’s next great superstar, helping the Penguins win the Stanley Cup trophy in 2009 and then earn back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017. It was the first time since the NHL instituted salary cap that a team won two straight championships. With five Stanley Cup wins, the Penguins are now tied with Edmonton for the most by any team outside of the Original Six.

In 2010, the Penguins said goodbye to the Civic Arena in downtown Pittsburgh – aptly nicknamed "The Igloo" – and moved into their current home, PPG Paints Arena. Originally known as the Consol Energy Center, the arena is the first in the NHL to be gold-certified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). PPG Paints Arena is located east of downtown Pittsburgh and also hosts the intra-city college basketball rivalry game between the Pitt Panthers and Duquesne Dukes.
