Later in the season, Karstens was hit by Milwaukee’s Chris Smith, prompting a bases-clearing brawl that helped to further ignite the Brewers-Pirates rivalry.

The rivalry has even extended to stadiums, as the Brewers and Pirates opened new stadiums in the same year. In 2001, the Pirates moved into PNC Park, a masterpiece of a ballpark that sits adjacent to the three rivers that run through Pittsburgh and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline. That was the same year the Brewers opened Miller Park, which is known for a number of charming quirks that can’t be found in other ballparks, including the aforementioned Sausage Race.
